Nacho "PokerLoans1" Barbero nabs 2/2/16 Super Tuesday for $92K

This week's $1,050 buy-in Super Tuesday at PokerStars drew the typically tough field, with another big turnout of 488 adding another challenge to those hoping to win. During the tournament's final stages there were several familiar players making it close to the final table, and a few more among the final nine, too, including Sweden's Daniel "42ayay" Erlandsson and Canada's Robert "Little Kraut" Deppe.

In the end, though, it was Argentina's Nacho "PokerLoans1" Barbero grabbing the chip lead with five players left and never looking back, with the two-time Latin American Poker Tour champion ultimately taking down the tournament for a handsome $92,720 first prize.

That big field meant a $488,000 prize pool, besting the $425K guarantee. It would take about five-and-a-half hours for the 488 who started to play down to 63, at which point BARBARVSSA2 was leading the chip counts by a wide margin.

Also still in the hunt at that point were a couple of red spade-sporters, Team PokerStars Pro George Danzer and Naoya "nkeyno" Kihara of Team PokerStars Pro Online, both with below average stacks.

Danzer managed to last a short while longer. His end came in a hand that started out four-way, then by the river involved just himself and Seth "SFisch4" Fischer. At that point Danzer committed what he had left with the board showing [Qs][6s][Jh][5c][4h] and Danzer having two pair with [5s][4s]. But Fischer called with [8s][7s] for an eight-high straight and Danzer was done in 47th ($2,293.60).

Kihara made it a bit further before finally committing the last of his stack with [Jd][Jc] versus BARBARVSSA2's [Ah][Kh], and when an ace came among the community cards Kihara hit the rail in 27th ($2,928).

A while later they were down to 18 gathered around the final two tables, with Robert "Little Kraut" Deppe the new chip leader and BARBARVSSA2 still near the top of the counts in second position.

Miltos "Miltos14″ Kyriakides (18th), Pedro "PaDiLhA SP" Padilha (17th), and Seth "SFisch4" Fischer (16th) were the next three to be eliminated, earning $3,904 apiece. They were followed by bolivianSWAG (15th), Carter "cswidler" Swidler (14th), and Dani "supernova9" Stern (13th) who took away $4,880 apiece. Then RunLkMercier (12th), Dönig (11th), and Benjamin "SPEKTAH" Leblond (10th) were knocked out, earning $5,856 each for not quite making the final nine.

They'd just crossed the tourney's eight-hour mark, and the final table was underway with Robert "Little Kraut" Deppe the new frontrunner.

Seat 1: Daniel "42ayay" Erlandsson (Sweden) -- 354,750
Seat 2: all in 2526 (Israel) -- 170,577
Seat 3: gnetaren (Sweden) -- 667,967
Seat 4: antispeed (Lebanon) -- 104,451
Seat 5: brights88 (Lebanon) -- 222,477
Seat 6: katenok3388 (Russia) -- 137,140
Seat 7: BARBARVSSA2 (Russia) -- 132,088
Seat 8: Nacho "PokerLoans1" Barbero (Argentina) -- 171,957
Seat 9: Robert "Little Kraut" Deppe (Canada) -- 478,593

The very first hand of the final table saw an elimination.

katenok3388 opened with a min-raise to 11,200 from middle position and BARBARVSSA2 called from the next seat. The flop came [9c][4h][Ts], prompting a bet of 14,840 from katenok3388. BARBARVSSA2 then raised to 81,620, katenok3388 reraised again, and BARBARVSSA2 called all in with the 38,568 behind.

BARBARVSSA2 had top pair with [Ac][Td], but katenok3388 had that beat with [Qh][Qc]. The turn was the [6s] and river the [Kh], and BARBARVSSA2 was out in ninth.

A little less than 15 minutes later the blinds were 3,200/6,400 when all in 2526 -- who has won multiple Super Tuesdays in the past -- open-pushed from the cutoff for 47,743 holding [Qc][Td] and brights88 called from the big blind holding [Ah][3d]. The flop came [2h][5c][4s], giving brights88 a wheel and leaving all in 2526 essentially drawing dead. The [Qs] and [Jh] completed the board and all in 2526 was eliminated in eighth.

A few minutes later they were in the same level when brights88 min-raised to 14,400 from the button, katenok3388 reraise-shoved for 66,426 from the small blind, and brights88 called. katenok3388 had [6s][6h] and brights88 [Ks][Th], and five cards later -- [4c][Js][Ts][Qs][2s] -- brights88 had made a flush and katenok3388's run was over in seventh.

They moved past the nine-hour mark, with brights88 the new leader and Nacho "PokerLoans1" Barbero the short stack. Barbero would soon manage a double-up through brights88, however, to tighten things up again a bit among the six players. Then a little later Barbero min-raised to 18,000 from the cutoff, Daniel "42ayay" Erlandsson reraised all in for 100,821 from the small blind, and Barbero called.

Barbero had [As][Qd] and the edge versus Erlandsson's [Ac][6c]. The board came [Kc][3d][2d], then [9c], then [3h], and Erlandsson had been ousted in sixth.

Play continued, with Barbero eventually moving into the chip lead with five left. Then came a hand in which antispeed min-raised to 20,000 from the cutoff and got two allers in Nacho "PokerLoans1" Barbero (small blind) and Robert "Little Kraut" Deppe (big blind).

The flop came [2d][Kd][3h] and Barbero led with a bet of 24,567. Next to act, Deppe responded with a raise to 76,000, then antispeed shoved all in for 246,005. At that Barbero folded, but Deppe called all in with the 152,331 he had behind.

Deppe showed [Td][6d] for a flush draw while antispeed had top pair, top kicker with [Ac][Kh]. The turn was the [5h] and river the [9s], and having failed to improve his hand Deppe was knocked out in fifth.

As they moved through the tournament's 11th hour Barbero continued to pressure the others, and when the topic of a possible deal arose he said he wasn't interested. Then after winning a big hand versus gnetaren, Barbero had moved up over 1.1 million while the other three all were hovering between 400,000 and 500,000.

By the time they crossed the 11-hour mark and moved into hour number 12, Barbero was pushing up close to 1.5 million with gnetaren closest with just over 600,000, antispeed third with almost 208,000, and brights88 fourth with just under 147,000.

Soon it was brights88 open-raising all in from UTG for 144,328 (a little over seven big blinds) and Barbero the only caller from the small blind. brights99 had [9s][6s] and Barbero [Ac][Td]. The flop came [6c][Ts][4c] to give each player a pair, then after the [7d] turn and [4h] river brights88's Super Tuesday ended with a fourth-place finish.

That knockout just improved Barbero's position even further, and a while later when antispeed open-pushed from the small blind for 315,484 (just uder 13 BBs), Barbero called in a snap. antispeed had [Jh][8h] but Barbero had picked up [Ac][Ah]. The board came [Kd][Qh][Qc][3h][2s], and antispeed had been stopped in third.

That put Barbero up over 2 million to start heads-up play, and with 2,032,776 had almost a 5-to-1 chip lead over gnetaren's 407,224. Their duel would last almost 15 minutes, with gnetaren earning one double-up along the way but getting whittled back down under 200,000 when the last hand finally took place.

With the blinds at 15,000/30,000, gnetaren open-pushed for 171,848 over the small blind and Barbero called. gnetaren had [Jh][6s] and a couple of live overcards to Barbero's [3d][3h], but the [Kc][4d][Ac][9d][Ts] kept the treys in front and it was over -- Barbero had won!

Congratulations to Nacho "PokerLoans1" Barbero for topping this week's Super Tuesday field for a $92,720 first prize!

PokerStars named Best Online Poker Operator

For the fourth consecutive year, the International Gaming Awards has awarded the 'Poker Operator of the Year' title to PokerStars, an Amaya Inc. (Nasdaq: AYA; TSX: AYA) brand.

"We are proud that the independent judging panel named PokerStars as the 'Online Poker Operator of the Year'," said Eric Hollreiser, vice president of Corporate Communications, Amaya and PokerStars. "We are grateful to have earned the award, and dedicate this to the millions of players and thousands of staff who have contributed to PokerStars' ongoing success."

2016 Online Poker Operator IGA by Michael Josem.jpg

REASONS FOR THE AWARD

There were three key themes behind PokerStars' success in 2015: the bigger, better, & richer online tournaments; and a comprehensive vision to grow the game of poker.

The story that dominated headlines in 2015 at PokerStars was the massive popularity of Spin & Go's (approx. 150 million real money games played on the global, shared liquidity, player pool), which was driven by two key attractions:

• The special $1 million Spin & Go tournaments, which cost as little as $0.50 to enter, and have resulted in 13 million-dollar winners to date.

• Spin & Go's are perfect for mobile players. With most new players on PokerStars now joining through the mobile apps, mobile-friendly formats are likely to become even more popular in 2016 and beyond.

Online tournament festivals and special one-off events also flourished with PokerStars hosting the biggest World Championship of Online Poker to date (70 events), which resulted in the richest WCOOP ever with more than $66 million awarded to players across three weeks. There was also the biggest online tournament buy-in ever - a $51,000 Super High Roller - that was won by Canadian player Ben 'Ben86' Tollerene for more than $600k.

And if ever proof was needed that online poker is still incredibly popular around the world, PokerStars set a new Guinness World Record for Largest Online Poker Tournament in October, when 253,698 players registered for a $0.01 event, beating the previous record of 225,000 players set in June 2013.

As part of PokerStars' comprehensive plan to introduce new audiences to poker, in May 2015, two of the world's most famous sportsmen - Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar Jr - joined PokerStars as brand ambassadors. The signings demonstrated a strong strategic move to introduce poker to mainstream audiences, Cristiano Ronaldo having the most popular Facebook page in the world with more than 100 million fans, and Neymar Jr also having over 50 million fans.

Looking ahead to EPT Dublin

I don't know if you can remember what you were doing on November 7, 2007, but the EPT was wrapping up its last event in Dublin. Rueben Peters and Annette Obrestad put the finishing touches to the tournament and in fine style. Most had expected the unstoppable Obrestad to sweep across the finish line, but it was Peters who took the title, after a final that was talked about for months.

But as the EPT expanded and new venues across Europe were tried, Dublin took a backseat. That is until now.

The European Poker Tour makes a welcome return to the Irish capital this month, more than eight years since it crowned Peters a champ. A lot has changed in that time, as will be obvious when the festival kicks off at the Royal Dublin Society in exactly a week from today.

peters_obrestad_2feb16.jpgReuben Peters and Annette Obrestad, heads up at EPT4 Dublin

In addition to what will be a 67 tournament visit, the EPT will be putting on a whole range of activities for players away from the tables to fill those hours between action at them, all part of #STARSFUN.

Let us introduce a few of the highlights.

Right away on Thursday February 11, they'll be Dodgeball Trampolining. Yep, you read that right. #STARSUN is laying on Dodgeball for up to 32 players wishing to take part in a game that, to be honest, I thought was fictional. Turns out I was wrong. Instead it's a high energy, high velocity version of chicken, and a lot of fun.

Contact concierge@ept-travel.com to register, or sign up at the PokerStars Information Desk directly. You'll need to read the rules and sign a waiver, but otherwise you meet at 12 noon at the RDS main entrance for a few hours of dodgeball heroics.

Days later on Saturday February 13, PokerStars will be hosting the EPT Dublin player party at the Horse Show House in Dublin from 9pm. As always this is a great opportunity to get a break from action at the tables, meet fellow players, talk shop and/or enjoy the contents of a free bar.

All of which should set you up nicely from the Right to Play Charity Event on Sunday February 14. It's an event that has proven increasingly popular at each EPT stop, both for the enjoyment factor, the prizes on offer, and of course the cause.

Starting at 6pm, the Right to Play Charity Event has a €150 buy-in, with €50 unlimited re-buys, and all proceeds going to Right to Play. Prizes meanwhile are kindly donated by partners Helping Hands, the European Poker Tour and EPT travel.

They include:

€1,000 in Live Event Tournament Credits
iPhone® 6 Plus
€550 in Live Event Tournament Credits
iPad Air 2
Weekend away for two*
Apple Watch
€330 in Live Event Tournament Credits
Dinner for two

* Please Note: the two night stay is at the discretion of EPT Travel and depends on the availability of selected dates.

That just leaves the festival itself, which gets underway next Tuesday with a satellite to the UKIPT Dublin Main Event. That's followed by the UKIPT Main Event itself on Wednesday February 10 with a $1,000 buy-in.

On Friday the three day High Roller event begins with a buy-in of €25,000, with the EPT Main Event starting on Sunday. There's plenty more events in between, in variations to suit every taste. TCOOP 2016: buzzard1881 on his TCOOP title... make that two

The following is a little late. Our interview with buzzard1881 was supposed to be published last week. He'd just won TCOOP-06, a 6-Max shootout tournament with a first prize of $17,539. He'd told us about it, and we were all set, only for the plan to run into a problem five days later. What happened exactly? buzzard1881 won a second TCOOP title, that's what.

It means that if you look carefully at this page you'll see the tire marks where we rammed the brakes, swerved, and the story in another direction entirely. We wanted to hear about the second win too. And while we may have permanently ruined our suspension, it makes for some interesting reading.

tcoop_logo_1feb2016.jpg

The first time we spoke to buzzard1881 he'd explained his fondness for shootout events. The fact you can take one step at a time had an appeal, he'd said, a more comfortable scenario than the pressures (if profitable pressures) of playing heads-up, for example. Then he won a second title in Stud hi/lo.

"Stud Hi/Lo is my all-time favourite and probably my best game," he said. "I love Stud Hi/Lo and it continues to reciprocate my love. Everyone should play it!"

Maybe any event you win immediately becomes a favourite. But then as buzzard1881 admitted even that was hard to say.

"The tournament was really a blur, being a turbo, but I think I remember going on a good run on the last two tables where I had a buried pair I think 3-3-4 and was able to hit a three on sixth street to win a really big pot and give myself the chip lead. I had pretty good control of the final table and got some crucial holds to take it down."

Ready to sign up for PokerStars? Click here to get an account.

He wasn't kidding, as the results show. And in hindsight perhaps it's not that surprising. Buzzard1881 considers himself a Stud player first, a hold'em player second, something that gave him an edge over less practiced opponents.

"I just had to hope the cards came to me. I'm really happy that they did."

All of which came shortly after the shootout win. You can read the full report of the final table HERE, which details some of the key points in buzzard1881's win. That includes a hand buzzard1881 played with ace-nine, one that would prove pivotal.

"It was definitely the key moment," he said. "Throughout the tournament, when I got to the point where I had doubled my starting stack, I knew I was going to get to the last three players and give myself a good chance to win. Anything can happen though so I didn't think I had it won, but I continued to run extremely well."

There was also the deal. It's not normally a stage considered appropriate for generosity to make an appearance, but buzzard1881's approach was described by some onlookers as just that. Did he agree with that?

"It was going to be my biggest hold'em score regardless," he said. "But when you don't win the tournament it has a bittersweet sting. I guess I was just going to soften the blow if things went badly. I also put a bad beat on one of them so I thought I'd toss him a pork chop. I think it relaxed both of them enough where I could finish them off."

As a plan it worked. Buzzard1881 credits getting lucky earlier for his success, along with being able to execute well in the late stages. It seemed to be a strategy that worked well throughout TCOOP, and one he'd planned to adopt coming into the series.

"I keep expectations low and try to take it one tournament at a time. In tournaments for me it's really hard to not look ahead and get excited too early. You have to keep your head down and play as best you can."

That best meant buzzard1881 would finish the series with six cashes in all and two titles, good for joint sixth place on the Leader Board.

Buzzard1881 didn't really do much by way of celebration (nobody ever does), other than the traditional act of jumping back into a game somewhere. None of which takes anything away from the achievement itself.

"For myself though this definitely feels like the most satisfying win because it's been like nine years since my last hold'em tournament win and for it to be a big event like this it's awesome."

Read the full report of buzzard1881's two wins, first in the TCOOP-06 report HERE, and then the TCOOP-31 report HERE.

Weekend Review: Business as usual while TCOOP ends in style

A look at all the major stories from this past weekend on PokerStars.

Weekend highlights

* Another big weekend for TCOOP, with the Main Event won by Dinesh "NastyMinder" Alt who won a first prize of $396,691
* Damianos "damourinio" Aslanidis wins the Sunday Million, earning $155,457
* LameR25 takes down the Sunday Warm-Up

Round up of latest results

I think it's fair to say that the weekend was dominated by events taking place in TCOOP 2016 this weekend, which came to a close yesterday. We'll get to that in a moment, but first let's pay traditional respects to the Sunday Major winners, specifically Damianos "damourinio" Aslanidis in the Sunday Million, and LameR25 in the Sunday Warm-Up.

In the former there was a heads-up encounter that promised a fitting end. Damourinio himself has more than $1 million of winnings on PokerStars, but he was up against Vladimir "vovtroy" Troyanovskiy, a player with multiple scores online and some $4.2 million won in the live game. As Martin Harris it was something of a scrap, and well worth reading about, which you can do here.

Meanwhile in the Warm-Up eventual winner LameR25 took his time winning the first prize of $84,420. As David Aydt reported for the Blog, he arrived at the final table some way off the lead, but set about reversing his position, doing so with aplomb. Read the report of that final table here.

Here are those two results in full:

The weekend's top online tournament winners

It's not every weekend that the Sunday Million pay-out looks small, but this was one of those weekends. Thanks to the back end of TCOOP, with Main Events and High Rollers filling the schedule, damourinio's $155,457 Sunday Million win was only the fourth biggest of the weekend, with TCOOP titles filling the top three spots.
