Sunday Million: Heavy metal man Nelson 'FeCoNiCuZn' Maccini bangs out win and 166K score

Iron, Cobalt, Nickel, Copper, and Zinc. Those are five metals included on the Periodic Table of Elements, which also happen to make up the online poker moniker of Australian Nelson 'FeCoNiCuZn' Maccini. Before tonight, FeCoNiCuZn was best known for a victory in the opening event at the 2014 SCOOP. I don't know if his mates back home in Adelaide refer to Nelson 'FeCoNiCuZn' Maccini as 'Heavy Metal Maccini' or 'Iron Man Nelson', but perhaps they should simply call him by his newest distinction: The Sunday Million Champion.

With three tables to go, FeCoNiCuZn amassed a big stack and emerged as the player to beat. FeCoNiCuZn held the overall lead for most of the final table until it got heads up. After a rugged, 40-minute heads-up fracas, FeCoNiCuZnlost coughed up the lead but managed to get it back and cruise into the victory's circle. FeCoNiCuZn is now two major victories away (TCOOP and WCOOP) from the elusive Stars Slam.

There must be some sort of disturbance in the force, or a numerology anomaly with 2016 because this year's Sunday Million has seen an inordinate amount of repeat champions embark on hella-deep runs. It happened last week with Luis "Turko_Man" Rodriguez when the Finland-based Turko_Man shipped the Sunday million for a second time after previously winning it back in 2009. Earlier this year, PokerStars celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Sunday Million and at least 10 players can boast that they shipped the Million twice. Yep, 10 repeat champs are members of the Two-Timer Club. Although this week's winner had never won the big one before, a handful of players had final tabled the Sunday Million once again.

This installment of the $215 buy-in Sunday Million attracted 5,866 runners. The field of Sunday grinders and amateurs alike boosted the overall prize pool to $1,173,200, which pushed it over the $1 million guarantee. The top 855 places got a cut of the pool, with a juicy portion worth $181,848.88 set aside to the inevitable champion.

Team PokerStars Pro Elky managed to scrounge up a cash. The French video gamer legend is still sharp as ever at the virtual poker tables, but Elky's deep run was thwarted when he busted in 575th place.

With 27 players to go on the final three tables, FeCoNiCuZn jumped out to a lengthy lead when the Aussie became the first player to pass the 10M chip mark. He held nearly 3x as much as MG10tze, the German player in second place overall. FeCoNiCuZn seemed to have plateaued after hitting 10M. By the time action dwindled down to 18 players, königkunde made a run at the overall lead. The German surged to second overall with over 9.5M and was nipping at FeCoNiCuZn's heels. The two behemoth stacks were prepping for an inevitable heads-up showdown.

On the final table bubble with 10 to go, FeCoNiCuZn chipped up to 14M. That's when jaytheo40 attempted to double up with [Tc][Ts] against FeCoNiCuZn's [Ad][9d]. FeCoNiCuZn flopped an Ace and that's all she wrote for jaytheo40, who bubbled off the final table in tenth place.

4/17/16 Sunday Million - Final Table Chip Counts:
Seat 1: yukeepplayin (1,654,523)
Seat 2: Vovas05 (4,590,476)
Seat 3: Neoben78 (2,201,504)
Seat 4: liran2788 (3,369,607)
Seat 5: politm69 (1,029,424)
Seat 6: königkunde (12,844,474)
Seat 7: MG10tze (6,222,636)
Seat 8: jerbi9999 (9,519,313)
Seat 9: FeCoNiCuZn (17,228,043)

The Sunday Million final table commenced during the end of level 35 with 80K/160K blinds and a 16K ante. FeCoNiCuZn was in the captain's chair as the final table chip leader. Romania's politm69 was the proverbial short stack with a shade over 1M. The final table was divided into players who went deep in COOP events and players who had previously made a Sunday Million final table.

FeCoNiCuZn is no stranger to the winner's circle. The young Aussie has a SCOOP bracelet after he won the opening event at the 2014 SCOOP for his first-ever COOP title. At the 2015 SCOOP, Germany's königkunde finished in 8th place in the Heads-Up High Roller event after getting picked off by the eventual champion. Meanwhile, fellow German MG10tze final tabled a 2014 WCOOP event for a $20K score. At the 2014 TCOOP, Israel's jerbi9999 won nearly $26K for a sixth-place finish in a Turbo rebuy event.

Several players who previously went deep in the Million had made multiple appearances at the final table including yukeepplayin, liran2788, and politm69. Canada's yukeepplayin final tabled the Sunday Million back in February 2014, but only cashed in eighth place for $15K. In March of 2013, liran2788 got close to winning the Sunday Million, but the Israeli chopped the Million five ways and  eventually finished in second overall for a $166K score. Two years ago, politm69 squeezed out a fourth-place finish in the Sunday Million for a $79K score.

PLANET CARAVAN: liran2788 eliminated in 9th place

It took a classic race to bring down the first player at the final table. The good ole Jacks vs. Big Slick. Alas, the rich got richer because big-stacked FeCoNiCuZn dragged the pot with two pair -- Jacks and fours. All the money went in pre-flop when liran2788 open-shoved for 3,273,607. Everyone got out of the way, except FeCoNiCuZn who snap-called with [Js][Jh] versus liran2788's [Ac][Kh]. Although liran2788 turned a Broadway straight draw, it would have been futile because a Jack would have filled in a boat for FeCoNiCuZn. The board finished up [Qs][4s][4h][Th][8c] and liran2788 failed to improve. FeCoNiCuZn won with "Jacks Up" or two pair. Israel's liran2788 became the first player to exit the final table and busted in ninth place, which paid out $9,150.96.

ELECTRIC FUNERAL: yukeepplayin eliminated in 8th place

Two hands later, we saw the second bustout at the final table. Alas, yukeepplayin was not playing anymore after running [As][4c] into Neoben78's [Ad][Ks]. Short-stacked yukeepplayin bombed it all-in for 1,586,523 and Neoben78 insta-called from the small blind with a dominating Big Slick versus Ace-rag. Both players flopped a pair of Aces, but Neoben78 won with a better King-high kicker after the board finished up [Ac][Jc][8h][2c][6s]. Canada's yukeepplayin was dunzo in eighth place, which paid out $14,665.00.

With seven remaining, a formidable FeCoNiCuZn retained first with nearly 18M while königkunde sat in second with 14M. Shorty politm69 continued to bring up the rear with 1.4M.

FAIRIES WEARS BOOTS: politm69 eliminated in 7th place

Romania's politm69 gaunt stack was down to 559,848 before making a final stand with [Ks][Qd]. However, jerbi9999 called with [Ah][Tc], hoping to pick off a shorty. The board ran out [9h][8c][8h][5h][Qh]. politm69 rivered a Queen to improve to two pair -- Queens and Eights -- but jerbi9999 rivered a four-flush to win the pot with Ace-high heart flush. Romania's politm69 earned $25,810.40 for a seventh-place performance.

With six left in the hunt, FeCoNiCuZn led with 15.2M and königkunde was in second with 14.5M. Meanwhile, MG10tze and Neoben78 battled it out as basement dwellers with 5.1M each.

RAT SALAD: Vovas05 eliminated in 6th place

Two shorties rumbled. Only one survived. The other was read their last rites. Another coin flip. This time Big Slick was pitted against pocket treys. Alas, a late King on the river trumped the treys. Vovas05 open-shoved for 3,346,287 and Neoben78 re-shoved for 3,869,360. Vovas05 led slightly with [3c][3h] against Neoben78's [Ah][Ks]. However, the board ran out [Ts][Td][5s][7d][Kh]. Vovas05 had flopped two pair but was rundown on the river when the King of hearts spiked and crushed Vovas05's hopes of staving off an elimination. Neoben78 won the pot with Kings and tens. Meanwhile, Ukraine's Vovas05 was knocked out in sixth place, which paid out $37,542.40.

HAND OF DOOM: Neoben78 eliminated in 5th place

Neoben78 attempted to square off against big-stacked FeCoNiCuZn. The chip leader min-raised to 800K and both the blinds called (Neoben78 and königkunde). The flop was [Ac][Td][Ts]. The blinds checked to FeCoNiCuZn, who fired out 800K. Neoben78 called, but königkunde bailed. Heads-up. The [Jc] fell on the turn. Neoben78 checked, FeCoNiCuZn bet 1.6M, Neoben78 check-raised all-in for 5,935,647, and FeCoNiCuZn called.

Neoben78: [Ad][9d]
FeCoNiCuZn: [Kd][Qd]

Neoben78 flopped two pair with Aces Up, but FeCoNiCuZn flopped a Broadway gutter and got there on the turn. The river was the [Js], which did not help Neoben78, who lost with two pair against FeCoNiCuZn's Broadway straight. Neoben78 from Luxembourg busted in fifth place, which paid out $49274.40. After dragging a 16M pot, FeCoNiCuZn chipped up to over 36M.

DEAL

With four to go, a deal discussion took place. FeCoNiCuZn held an overwhelming lead with over 60% of the chips in play and an intimidating 36M stack. The other three were roughly the same size with approximately 7.5M each. They had to leave $20,000 on the table for first place, but the numbers were floated:

FeCoNiCuZn ($146,377,34)
MG10tze ($104,171.55)
königkunde ($103,564.06)
jerbi9999 ($103,558.31)

The players liked the ICM numbers and everyone agreed on the deal. With a money chop in place, action resumed.

PARANOID: jerbi9999 eliminated in 4th place

Short-stacked jerbi9999 busted in a multi-way pot after attempting to triple up (for his last 277,789) against FeCoNiCuZn and königkunde. The board finished up [Ad][8h][8c][Tc][Js] and königkunde rivered a Jack-high straight with [9h][7s] to scoop the main pot and side pot. Both FeCoNiCuZn and jerbi9999 mucked their losing hands. For a fourth-place finish, Israel's jerbi9999 locked up $103,558.31.

With three remaining... it was an Aussie and two Germans... FeCoNiCuZn led with 30M, followed by königkunde's 17.6M and MG10tze (10.8M).

WAR PIGS: MG10tze eliminated in 3rd place

It did not last three-handed very long before we saw fireworks in a Motown-inspired brawl or the "Jackson Five Bout" when a pair of Jacks held up against pocket fives. königkunde min-raised to 1M, MG10tze bombed it all-in for 5,999,658, FeCoNiCuZn called, but königkunde folded. Heads-up. MG10tze trailed with [5h][5c] against FeCoNiCuZn's [Js][Jh]. FeCoNiCuZn improved to a set of Jacks on the flop, yet MG10tze failed to improve after the board finished up [Ks][Jd][7h][3c][8s]. FeCoNiCuZn dragged the 13M pot. Germany's MG10tze was knocked out in third place, which paid out $104,171.55

HEADS-UP: königkunde (Germany) vs. FeCoNiCuZn (Australia)
Seat 6: königkunde (23,853,491)
Seat 9: FeCoNiCuZn (34,806,509)

FeCoNiCuZn picked off one German, but he was heads-up with the other. It was finally down to the final two with FeCoNiCuZn holding a 34.8M to 23.8M edge. The two would spar for a good 15 minutes before either of them did any significant damage.

Approximately 25 minutes into heads-up, a huge hand developed in which königkunde doubled up from 19M to 38M with [Ah][Kd] vs. FeCoNiCuZn's [As][7h]. königkunde dragged a 38.3M pot to seize a 2-1 advantage. However, königkunde's lead was short lived because FeCoNiCuZn rallied and stormed back to even up the score within nine hands.

königkunde embarked on another mini-rush winning five consecutive hands including a 13M pot to take a sizable lead 41.4M to 17.2M. FeCoNiCuZn quickly launched a counter-attack and won 6 out of the next 9 hands including a pair of 22M pots. The first one closed the gap 33.3M to 25.3M. The second one put him back in the lead 45M to 13.5M after he dragged a pot with two pair -- Queens and eights. Four hands later... it was all over.

IRON MAN: königkunde eliminated in 2nd place; FeCoNiCuZn binks Sunday Milly!

On the penultimate hand, FeCoNiCuZn won a 17.4M pot with two pair with Doyle Brunson's favorite hand -- 10-2 off suit. That hand put FeCoNiCuZn ahead 52M to 6.5M.

On the final hand... FeCoNiCuZn insta-shoved for 52,026,036 and königkunde called for 5,433,964. königkunde was in trouble with [Jd][Td] against a sturdy Ace and FeCoNiCuZn's [Ad][9c]. The turn gave königkunde a glimmer of hope with an open-ended straight draw, but FeCoNiCuZn faded a straight on the river to win the pot.  The board ran out [Kd][7s][3h][Qd][Kc]. FeCoNiCuZn never improved but won the pot with a pair of Kings a better Ace-high kicker. Unfortunately, königkunde could not come from behind to avoid an elimination. For an impressive second-place performance, Germany's königkunde earned a payday worth $103,564.06.

Congrats to the newest Sunday Million champion -- FeCoNiCuZn from Australia. With a four-way money chop locked up, first place this week paid out $166,377.34. That's almost enough cash to play the Sunday Million every week for the next 15 years!

Sunday Warm-Up: Jenny has the answer as m8675309a wins $58K after chop

The weather in this neck-of-the-woods is finally showing its true season. A day of sunshine, freshly raked lawn, and ten tons of pollen-induced allergies on my nose while settling in along with 2,365 runners for this week's $425,000 guarantee Sunday Warm-Up.

Someone not affected by a stuffy head and consistently dripping nose? Our champ this week, m8675309a, earning the biggest slice of a five-way chop, then polished off the remaining four players while taking away $58,452.38.

Read on below as m8675309a proves to be more than a one-hit wonder.

Well into the eighth hour of play Chris "ImDaNuts" Oliver was back again looking for a Sunday Major title. If you do not remember, Oliver was one player away from taking home the 2011 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) Main Event title. His road to a victory tonight almost ended in the eighth hour after a shoving a short-stack with ace-five and getting looked up by krapcity112's ace-king. A four-flush on the river would keep Oliver's title hopes alive.

Another familiar face in Sasuke234 who has several Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) final tables and a Super Tuesday one last year banking $17K in seventh place. But, Sasuke234 would not add a Sunday Warm-Up final table this week after pocket fives failed to carry through the river versus m8675309a's ace-seven earning $3,074.50 in 12th place.

A few minutes later after three-time -COOP champ Sam "Str8$$$Homey" Greenwood failed to spin-up a short-stack in 11th place ($3,074.50), with the blinds up to 50K/100K ante 10K P Force 7 would be all-in pre-flop for 338K as rasulov_a and Duraircwb joined in. The paired board [8c] [Ah] [4h] [Ac] [7s] got Duraircwb to bet the turn and river as rasulov_a decided to get out after the 523K river bet. Good call on rasulov_a's part as Duraircwb turned over a boat [8s][8h] which P Force 7's [Qh][Th] could not match starting up the final table below:

SundayWarmUp_041716.jpg

Seat 1: krapcity112 (3004421 in chips)
Seat 2: Duraircwb (3809426 in chips)
Seat 3: pulbier (1138002 in chips)
Seat 4: rasulov_a (3424024 in chips)
Seat 5: tjmosier (2126865 in chips)
Seat 6: ibotown (1104706 in chips)
Seat 7: INGA951 (1105930 in chips)
Seat 8: m8675309a (3878437 in chips)
Seat 9: ImDaNuts (4058189 in chips)

Nine hands into the final table with the blinds holding at 50K/100K ante 10K krapcity112 decided to pressure the short-stacked big blind by shoving 2.77 million from middle position. INGA951 was up for the challenge, calling all-in for 893K holding [Jh][Th]. A flip against krapcity112's pocket nines [9c][9s] looked good after flopping a ten and a straight draw, but a nine on the turn [Qs] [Ts] [Ad] [9h] [6s] would send INGA951 home in ninth place ($4,020.50).

Half-way through the ninth hour with the blinds moving up to 65K/130K ante 13K tjmosier would raise from middle position as krapcity112, unable to gain ground after eliminating INGA951, would shove all-in from the big blind for 936K as tjmosier called with aces [Ac][Ah]. Bad news for krapcity112's big slick [Kc][Ad] as the flop gave some hope, [9h] [Th] [Jh] [5s] [6c] but by the river krapcity112 was gone in eighth place ($6,858.50).

Ten minutes later heading towards the tenth hour of play with the blinds moving up to 80K/160K ante 16K ibotown, who already has a Super Tuesday win, would shove for 790K getting a call from pulbier in the big blind. Ibotown's [8h][Ad] would not catch against pulbier's treys [3h][3s] on the [2s] [9s] [Qh] [2d] [Kh] board taking away $11,588.50 in seventh place.

Right before the ninth hourly break with the blinds at 100K/200K ante 20K m8675309a would min-raise as Duraircwb called from the big blind to see the [8d][6d][Js] flop. Duraircwb check-raised all-in for two million as m8675309a made the call holding a flush and straight draw [Td][Qd] facing Duraircwb's pair [Ks][6s]. The pair would not last past the turn [5d] making the [3c] river moot as Duraircwb's demise in sixth place ($16,318.50) would start some unusually early chop talks.

Several times over the ten minute chat, the final five were one uncooperative player away from the cards going back in the air without a deal, but they managed to kiss and make up while dividing the funds up below (leaving $8K for the champ):

m8675309a $50,452.38
rasulov_a $42,940.08
tjmosier $40,155.23
pulbier $39,180.78
ImDaNuts $39,060.44

After the five-way deal, things sped up considerably. Eight hands after the deal pulbier would min-raise as rasulov_a isolated with a shove for 4.3 million. Folded around back to pulbier who called all-in for 3.6 million and [Ad][Qs]. Unfortunately, rasulov_a's pocket nines [9c][9s] would do pulbier no favors on the [7h] [Kh] [8h] [Td] [5d] board grabbing $39,180.78 from the chop in fifth place.

Oliver did not wait long to make a move. Four hands later he would shove 3.77 million from the big blind after m8675309a completed the small blind. [Ac][3c] was enough to make the call as Oliver turned over [Js][Tc]. Thanks to the plethora of clubs [Qd] [8c] [5c] [Qc] [4c] both players would make a flush, but m8675309a's ace-high would send Oliver out in fourth place ($39,060.44).

chris_oliver_SundayWarm.JPG

Chris "ImDaNuts" Oliver - 4th place ($39,060.44)

After dispatching Oliver, m8675309a's sight turned immediately to tjmosier who shoved 2.2 million over m8675309a's min-raise. Still in a gambling mood (and owning over half the chips in play) m867509a made the call with [Kc][Jd] looking slightly up at tjmosier's [Ah][9s]. The ace would not make it to the river as a turned king [6s] [4s] [5h] [Ks] [9d] favored the chip leader thus ending tjmosier's tournament in third place ($40,155.23).

Heads-up play went the same way as the post-chop hands have.

Fast and in m8675309a's favor.

The chip leader would win all seven hands (well, one chopped) as the final hand played out like this. With the blinds up to 125K/250K ante 25K and after a [Jd][Ks][4c] flop rasulov_a would three-bet all-in for 4.8 million as m8675309a called with top pair [6d][Kc]. Not dead holding an open-ended straight draw [Qs][Tc] rasulov_a could not connect with the turn [6c] nor river [3s].
Top stack after the chop, top stack after finish as m8675309a called in a big win earning $58,452.38 as this week's Sunday Warm-Up champion!

Two more weeks to win $5,000 each day in Card Hunt

All good things must come to an end. Well sometimes. Not when it comes to the
PokerStars Card Hunt.

Card Hunt was due to end today, but this afternoon we got that Friday feeling and now we're announcing an extension. You can now continue your daily Card Hunt challenges, with $5,000 in cash to be won every day until April 30

card_hunt_15apr16.jpgIt's in here somewhere...

It's proved one of our most popular challenges, and here's why.

For one thing we've given away more than half a million prizes so far. To put a number on that it amounts to more than $1.1 million in prize money. Who knows what that figure will be by the end of the month, but you've got two weeks more to win your share.

Here's a reminder of how it works:

*Each day you are presented with a puzzle board containing between 16 and 20 pieces
*Each piece represents a playing card in the deck
*When you win a hand with hole cards that match a card in your puzzle you will collect that puzzle piece
*Collect all puzzle pieces to win an instant cash prize of between $1 and $5,000

Simply open up your Challenge window in the PokerStars lobby to take part. And for a recap of what's involved there's the Card Hunt homepage.

Welcome to Lee's Trout Stream

Sadly, this is not an invite to a real trout stream, with babbling waterfalls, caddis hatches, and native brookies. It is, however, an invitation to a stream of sorts - in this case, a Twitch stream. If you're not familiar with Twitch, don't be alarmed - you're in good company. Basically, it's a platform where people play video games and other people watch them play those video games from a "first person shooter" perspective.

Helton_Creek_15april2016.jpgAn actual stream. Or more specifically Helton Creek, near to Lee's home in North Carolina

In the last couple of years, thanks to pioneering work by Jason Somerville, poker has become popular on Twitch. Tens of thousands of people around the world are enjoying and learning poker by watching a handful of experts (or not) play the game live.

My colleagues over at PokerSchoolOnline (PSO) decided to co-opt Twitch for even more directly educational purposes. For the last year or so, PSO teachers have been doing training sessions on Twitch for thousands of poker-hungry viewers. One of the most popular methods of training is reviews of hands that the viewers have played. In short, it's a way for players to get a thoughtful and professional review of poker hands that they found interesting for one reason or another.

Well, much to my delight, the PSO folks invited me to do my own hand review show on their Twitch channel. I jumped at the opportunity. My debut Trout Stream Twitch show is on Wednesday April 20 at 7pm UK time (2pm US East Coast). Join me there at https://www.twitch.tv/pokerschoolonline.

LeeJones_15april16.jpg

To get you ready let's answer a few questions you may have:

Q: Why are you on the PSO channel and not the primary PokerStars Twitch channel?

A: Well, the main reason is that, because I'm a PokerStars employee, I can't play on PokerStars for real money. Just as importantly, I don't think very many people would want to watch me play poker at all. I am no Jason Somerville, Jaime Staples, or Randy Lew.

Q: That gets me to the next question. Are you good enough to be teaching poker on Twitch?

A: That's a fair question, and the answer is "yes and no". I'm not a pro-caliber No Limit Hold'em player (okay, I'm not a pro-caliber any kind of poker player). But I have played, studied, and thought about the game extensively for decades. There are people playing on PokerStars who weren't born when my book Winning Low-Limit Hold'em was first published. Furthermore, I have given far more thought to how to teach poker than most players who are far superior to me at the table. So I may actually do a better job of teaching a newbie or novice poker player than somebody who could convincingly kick me from the #1 seat to the #7 seat and back again in a $2-5 NLHE game.

Finally, this is an amazing opportunity for me because I just plain love poker. I love teaching poker, and almost more than anything, I love hanging out with poker players and talking about hands. Goodness knows I've done that late into the night when sane people would have gone to bed. Now PSO is giving me the opportunity to do it as part of my job - how awesome is that?

So let's cover some specifics. I'm going to start out streaming on Wednesdays at 7:00pm UK time (2:00pm US East Coast), beginning Wednesday, April 20th. You just go to www.twitch.tv/pokerschoolonline and you'll see my smiling face. I'll be streaming for about two hours every Monday.

However, there can't be a show if I don't get sent the most interesting, difficult and craziest hands you've played to take a look at. The easiest and best way to get your hands discussed is to post them to the thread about
Lee's Trout Stream here.

You have to be a PSO member - it only takes about three minutes to sign up and it's free.

To post your hand, we encourage you to use the BOOM! player that's built into the PokerStars software. When you finish playing a hand of No Limit Hold'em (play or real money), you'll see a little red icon in the chat box next to the summary information about the hand. Click on that icon and select "BOOM! my hand". That will take you to a new web page with your hand loaded into the BOOM replayer. Just copy that URL and paste it into a post on the forum thread.

For more information about the BOOM! player, go to: www.boomplayer.com.

If we think your hand is interesting enough, it will become fodder for my discussion on a subsequent Lee's Trout Stream. And of course, all the other viewers will be providing their input in the chat box while we discuss your hand - you'll have a few hundred people telling you how you should have played the hand. Yes, that's a mixed blessing.

If you're watching and you don't remember how to use the BOOM player, no problem; just type "!boom" into the chat box and you'll get the instructions you need.

Also, feel free to drop a link to your BOOM hand right into the Twitch chat. If I see it and it looks fun, I'll talk about it right then and there.

But whether you bring hands to discuss or not, please do come out to Lee's Trout Stream. Again, the first gathering is at 7:00pm UK time (2:00pm US Eastern) on Wednesday, April 20. We've got a shady spot under a tree next to a nice deep hole where the big browns hang out. We're going to sit there, listen to the riffles, and talk poker.
