Narcis "Narcisus90" Nedelcu nabs second Super Tuesday title of year (10/13/15)

Winning a Super Tuesday is a special accomplishment for an online poker player, given how the weekly $1,050 no-limit hold'em tournament on PokerStars routinely draws the best players from around the world. Winning two of them in the space of less than seven months is even more special, and that's just what Narcis "Narcisus90" Nedelcu of Romania has managed to do after winning tonight's tournament, topping a field of 524 to win another Super Tuesday and a $74,000 first prize.

Nedelcu's win came following a three-way final table deal with Brazil's Gustavo "gremistaAK" Pinto and Amit "bblacklegend" Jain of India, with Jain having had the most chips at the time to guarantee himself a big $83,653.23 score and largest chunk of the prize pool. Here's the story of how Nedelcu outlasted those two as well as a tough final table that included Rasmus "RasA86" Agerskov and Dominik "Bounatirou" Nitsche.

2015.10.13-supertuesday-banner.jpg

That big field meant a $524,000 prize pool, well over the $400K guarantee. It was around the five-and-a-half-hour mark that they raced past the bursting of the bubble, and as the field shrunk below 63 it was pablotenisis racing ahead of the pack to assume the top spot.

A little over 90 minutes later they were already down to two tables, with Johan "busto_soon" van Til (23rd, $3,144) and Mike "munchenHB" Telker (20th, $3,144) among the recently eliminated. pablotenisis was still thriving with a top five stack while Amit "bblacklegend" Jain had moved up into first position.

Wenderr (18th), Philipp "philbort" Gruissem (17th), and TiltMeBig (16th) were the next to go, each earning $4,192. iCeVeNoM (15th), chikka21 (14th), and pyratul (13th) followed them to the rail, picking up $5,240 apiece. Then Patrick "pads1161" Leonard (12th), former chip leader pablotenisis (11th), and UA_Kharkov72 (10th) were successively eliminated, cashing for $6,288 each.

With Amit "bblacklegend" Jain still in front, having built a stack more than twice the size of the nearest challenger, the final table was underway.

Seat 1: lissi stinkt (Germany) -- 137,279
Seat 2: Rasmus "RasA86" Agerskov (Denmark) -- 106,028
Seat 3: Gustavo "gremistaAK" Pinto (Brazil) -- 223,058
Seat 4: KaptianKush (Canada) -- 410,531
Seat 5: E.D.B.T.ZUK (Canada) -- 91,975
Seat 6: Amit "bblacklegend" Jain (India) -- 850,353
Seat 7: Narcis "Narcisus90" Nedelcu (Romania) -- 238,582
Seat 8: Dominik "Bounatirou" Nitsche (United Kingdom) -- 196,326
Seat 9: deivid29 (Czech Republic) -- 365,868

The very first hand of the final table saw KaptianKush -- who won the Super Tuesday back in 2012 -- open with about a 2.5x raise to 12,320 from the cutoff, then E.D.B.T.ZUK made an all-in reraise to 91,275 from the button. It then folded to Narcis "Narcisus90" Nedelcu in the big blind who shoved for 237,882 total, forcing a fold from KaptianKush.

E.D.B.T.ZUK had [8s][8c] but Nedelcu had that beat wiht [Ts][Th], and five cards later -- [2h][Qs][Kh][9d][Qh] -- E.D.B.T.ZUK was on the rail in ninth.

A short while later the blinds were up to 3,200/6,400 when deivid29 opened for 14,400 from under the gun, then lissi stinkt shipped all in for 125,819 from a seat over. It folded to Amit "bblacklegend" Jain on the button who called the shove, then the blinds and deivid29 all stepped aside.

Jain had [Ac][Ks] while lissi stinkt had [Js][Jc]. The flop fell [Kh][As][8h] to give Jain two pair and the lead, and after the [8d] turn and [Ah] river Jain had improved to a full house as lissi stinkt -- winner of a SCOOP event this spring -- had been eliminated in eighth.

Just two hands later, Dominik "Bounatirou" Nitsche open-pushed his short stack of 67,734 (about 10-and-a-half BBs) from the button and Rasmus "RasA86" Agerskov called from the big blind.

Nitsche had [Ks][Qd] and needed help to survive against Agerskov's [Ad][9d]. The flop came [5s][3h][Jh], then the [Ah] turn paired Agerskov while providing Nitsche outs to Broadway. But the river was the [7h], and Nitsche was done in seventh.

Play marched on and they were nearing the tourney's nine-hour mark when deivid29 opened with a min-raise to 14,400 from the button, Rasmus "RasA86" Agerskov three-bet all in for 137,675 from the small blind, and deivid29 called.

Agerskov turned over [Th][9h] and had two overcards to deivid29's [6d][6c]. The flop came [4d][5s][6h], however, to give the latter a set. The [3d] provided chopportunities -- as they say on EPT Live -- but the river was the [Ks] and Agerskov was ousted in sixth.

Rasmus "RasA86" Agerskov

About 20 minutes later the blinds were 4,500/9,000 when Narcis "Narcisus90" Nedelcu open-pushed from the small blind and deivid29 called all in with the 83,576 after posting the BB. Nedelcu had [Kh][5c] while deivid29 was ahead with [7c][7d], but the [5d][Td][5h] flop gave Nedelcu trip fives and a big edge. The turn was the [Qh] and river the [2s], and deivid29's run had ended in fifth.

With four left Amit "bblacklegend" Jain continued to lead, having pushed way up close to 1.6 million by then with the other three hovering between 200K and 500K.

It wasn't too long after that KaptianKush was open-pushing from the small blind for 141,736 (not quite 16 BBs) and Jain called. KaptianKush had [Ad][8c] and was ahead of Jain's [Ks][Jc], but a [Kc][Tc][6s][4c][5s] runout gave Jain a pair and the pot, and KaptianKush finished fourth.

The remaining players continued for another 15 minutes, then stopped to discuss a deal with Amit "bblacklegend" Jain sitting with 1,686,716, Gustavo "gremistaAK" Pinto 584,946, and Narcis "Narcisus90" Nedelcu 348,338.

"ICM"-based numbers were suggested (leaving $8,000 for which to play), and while commenting that he knew "chip chop" numbers would be better for him, Jain agreed to the proposed figures. Meanwhile Nedelcu -- who as mentioned above won the Super Tuesday before just last March -- started petitioning for more, and while Jain wasn't giving up any Pinto finally agreed to do so to help the deal happen.

Not too long after the deal was made, Nedelcu used [Kc][Qc] to double through Jain's [Ad][9h] after getting all in before the flop and watching a queen come on the turn. Nedelcu then won a few more pots to edge ahead of Jain in the counts, then came a hand that saw the pair trading preflop bets until Jain six-bet shoved for nearly 900,000 (about 90 BBs) and Nedelcu called.

bblacklegend: [As][7h]
Narcisus90: [9h][9s]

The flop then came [Ad][2h][6d], pairing Jain's ace and leaving Nedelcu in dire straits with two cards to come. Then came the turn... the [9d]! A set for Nedelcu, and just like that Jain was drawing dead to finish in third.

With that big pot Nedelcu enjoyed a big lead to start heads-up play with 2,035,104 to Gustavo "gremistaAK" Pinto's 584,896. The pair played on for about 10 minutes, skipping the break scheduled for the tournament's 10-hour mark, with Nedelcu whittling Pinto down close to 300,000.

2015.10.13-supertuesday-pinto.jpg

Gustavo "gremistaAK" Pinto

Then it was Nedelcu raising to 26,280 from the button (a bit over 2x), Pinto reraise-pushing for 304,799, and Nedelcu calling.

gremistaAK: [Jd][7d]
Narcisus90: [Ah][Jc]

Pinto was in tough shape, and things became quickly worse with the [Ad][6c][Ts] flop. The [2s] then fell on the turn, making the [7h] river no matter, and Nedelcu had won.

Congratulations to Narcis "Narcisus90" Nedelcu who wins his second Super Tuesday in 2015, and kudos as well both to Gustavo "gremistaAK" Pinto and Amit "bblacklegend" Jain for making it to the three-handed deal and earning handsome payouts themselves.

ANZPT7 Melbourne: Final event reflections

The end of an era or the beginning of a new era?

The announcement that the upcoming ANZPT Melbourne will be the last-ever event on the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour evoked a mixed bag of emotions. The tour will be greatly missed, but there is still excitement in the unknowing of what lies ahead for poker in Australia.

It's a bittersweet goodbye to what has been a staple of Australian and New Zealand poker scenes. There is no doubt the ANZPT has played a big role in the growth of poker in the region and while the APPT will no doubt fill the hole that will be left, it is with a heavy heart that we farewell the ANZPT.

ANZPT_Melbourne_Rail_.jpg

The upcoming ANZPT Melbourne will be the last on the tour

Hopefully the poker community gets behind the upcoming ANZPT Melbourne and helps make it a last event to remember. The hopes are high that this one will be the biggest event in the tour's history. Wouldn't that be the best way to say goodbye?

"I have been very proud to be a part of the ANZPT over the years and I hope ANZPT Melbourne at the fabulous Crown Melbourne complex can set a new prize pool record as ANZPT's final event, beating the million dollar prize pool achieved just last season," ANZPT Commission Danny McDonagh said.

The first ANZPT I personally worked as part of the media coverage was the Season 2 Melbourne event in 2010. I was completely green and excited to work such a big event after cutting my teeth in small $550 events like the Joe Hachem Deep Stack. It was an exciting and overwhelming moment to kick off my career in the poker media.

What I remember most, even more than Martin Kozlov winning the title, is working with the passionate staff behind the tour such as Danny McDonagh and Sam Dawson, along with my poker media mentor Heath Chick. All three were clearly enthusiastic about helping grow the ANZPT into the best tour in the region and to watch them work so hard was inspiring.

So, Instead of going through a list of stats and numbers highlighting the success and importance of the ANZPT, the heart and soul of the tour have reached out to reflect on the end of the tour and some of their favourite memories.

The Commissioner (APPT President Danny McDonagh)

"Being part of the ANZPT has been hugely rewarding. From the early days of getting 493 players to ANZPT Sydney in Season 1, to the days when the tour peaked with 8 events across the Australia and New Zealand. Having the opportunity to run tournaments in places like Queenstown, Darwin and the Gold Coast was an absolute pleasure.

I think everyone's favourite aspect of the ANZPT wasn't just the poker, but all the fun that was had off the felt. Some highlights throughout the years were certainly times like playing Frisbee Golf in Queenstown, the night life on the Gold Coast, lawn bowling in Sydney and the tremendous pool in Perth.

Danny_McDonagh_Queenstown_Frisbee.jpg

McDonagh mastered his frisbee action at the last Queenstown event

There aren't many tours around the world where one month we are hosting an extremely intimate tournament in a tiny casino surrounded by the spectacular beauty of Queenstown, and the next event we end up at the fabulous Crown Melbourne complex, a venue that has achieved the first million-dollar prize pool of ANZPT Melbourne."

The Lead Blogger (Heath Chick)

"The ANZPT brought the Australian poker community together, so it's disappointing to see it go. The tour gave players, and media, an opportunity to visit all corners of Australia and New Zealand and experience more than just a poker tournament. We had some fun nights out in the early days and I really enjoyed visiting cities such as Adelaide, Queenstown and the Gold Coast, as well as places I'd never been to before such as Canberra, Perth and Darwin. The "Top End" was especially fun with unique experiences such as Litchfield National Park and "TOT".

On the felt, the battles for Player of the Year were always entertaining, with Tony Hachem's repeat POTY performance one to remember. I'll also remember Grant Levy and Brotha D becoming the only two players to win both an ANZPT and APPT title - an incredible achievement.

While it's easy to recognize the champions, I'll also never forget all of the talented players that ever finished runner-up in an ANZPT. They are the true heroes and it's a shame they now won't have a chance at redemption at an ANZPT."

Editor's note: Heath Chick finished runner-up in the Season 1 ANZPT Melbourne Main Event... The wound is still fresh six years on.

Heath-Chick-Melbourne.jpg

The Media and Event's Manager (Sam Dawson)

"What made the ANZPT great was the comradery between players from all over the region. To see genuine friendships emerge between dozens involved with playing and working on the tour is something I will miss most about the ANZPT.

This comradery wasn't just nurtured at the poker table but instead with memorable indoor cricket matches, tennis games, frisbee golf, skiing, flights over Milford Sound, fishing trips in Darwin, ping pong tournaments, bike rides and many other activities that separated the ANZPT from many other poker tours around the world.

Dawson_APPTSeoul.jpg

To watch some of Australia's best young players have their first results and see a resurgence of some of the old school players was a huge part of the ANZPT. Through the years some regulars of the ANZPT had children, got married and simply rode the highs and lows of life. I just feel privileged to have been a small part of their lives through poker."

_ _ _

There isn't much left to say except to implore everyone in the Australian poker community to get behind the last-ever ANZPT and give the tour the best send-off possible.

Simon Grabenschweiger on a Common Cents record breaking win

If you read the Blog yesterday you might have noticed our interview with Faraz Jaka, who won the Super Tuesday last week. Jaka is an insightful interviewee, and has a fascinating lifestyle that goes well with his nomadic poker career.

But while Jaka took away more than $100,000 for his win, it's not just the size of the cheque that makes a good story. Professionals are not just those competing for six figures, but those grinding away in the lower stakes too. Sometimes the micro stakes, like last weekend, albeit in a field big enough to set a new record.

That's where Simon "DaDumon" Grabenschweiger ("Dumon" being a play on his name and the formal "Sie" and informal "du" versions of "you" in German) comes in. He's an Austrian pro who, like more than 250,000 others, took a seat in the first ever Common Cents event on PokerStars, and along the way became a record breaker.

simon_grabenscheiger.jpgSimon Grabenschweiger

As far as tournaments go this one sounded like a lot of a PokerStars one, a prize pool of $100,000 and the chance to turn a relatively small investment into a fortune. The difference was the size of that investment - a single cent.

"It was Awesome! I couldn't believe it!"

This was Grabenschweiger, 26, on the win. The task at hand had been enormous. Some 253,698 players (topping the previous record of 225,000) and several hours of play stood in his way, although as Grabenschweiger explained, it helped to pay scant attention.

"I was playing a lot of other MTTs and totally forgot I registered for this a few days before," he said. "When it popped up I actually tried to get rid of it because I had 12 other tables running. I assumed it would be a lot of players, maybe even more then there were. The tournament had a huge overlay."

Even though he'd tried to ditch it, the event soon took on a different appearance, as Grabenschweiger went deeper and deeper. Then there was the adrenaline rush of reaching the final table, even with its push-or-fold nature (this was a Turbo after all). But Grabenschweiger was able to draw on seven years of experience in the game.

"On the final table every hand I won was a key hand I'd say. When we were four players I jammed from the small blind vs the big blind who was third in chips by quite a bit with Q3o, and flopped a Q.

"The short stack busted a few hands later when he shoved into my big blind and I called Q5o getting better than 2-1 and flopped a Q again. Both hands play themselves. Some people on the rail were thinking differently though."

Then with 300 players left Grabenschweiger allowed himself to start thinking that it might be his day.

"With that many players there were almost no regulars at that stage of the tournament, and even though the decisions are pretty easy from a mathematical point of view a lot of players are very inexperienced dealing with such short stacks. I was very confident in my abilities and had the run-good to back them up."

And he was right to be. As ridiculous as it sounded even to him, he'd outlasted the biggest online poker event ever held.

"I mean no one could ever imagine winning a turbo poker tournament vs that many players," said Grabenschweiger, who celebrated with two beers. "And I guess no one turned one cent into $10k in under seven hours before. I mean how would one approach that? That's one million times the buy-in. Nice ROI right there."
