You may have read his blog, or caught him online as Moorman1, or seen him at a televised @World Series of Poker Europe and @European Poker Tour final table. Chris is an accomplished online and live poker player, with $3 million in live tournament winnings.

We hope he will soon make himself at home at RankingHero and will look forward to his posts :) 

Athletes Replace Pros as the New Ambassadors of Poker?

This month poker media have featured a number of interviews and articles on the role of sponsored poker pros and world champions in promoting poker and enlisting new fans. Meanwhile the market seems to have found a solution and we are witnessing the substitution of professional poker stars with sports stars as the new champions of the industry.

The debate about the rights and obligations (if any) of poker champions was revived this month with the @Joe Hachem and @Daniel Negreanu interviews in Bluff Magazine and especially with Hachem’s dramatic claims that the ‘game of poker is dying’ and that @Jamie Gold and @Jerry Yang ‘destroyed the legacy of the world champ’, largely on account of their young age and lack of life experience.

Reactions from players and poker commentators ranged from solid support to wild disagreement. In related articles some explored the idea of a possible dress code in live poker or staging a special event or campaign to elect an official poker ambassador who needn’t be a world champion or even a bracelet winner. Though Daniel Negreanu disagrees with Hachem and argues that the world champion is by no means obligated to act as an ambassador for poker, he has stated on other occasions that sponsored pros owe it to their ‘organization and the game’ to observe minimum standards of conduct.

While much of Hachem’s bitterness with regard to the young players was attributed to his ‘negative’ attitude and personality or his simply being a bad loser, many agree that poker presently lacks viable role models likely to attract new fans of the game and to help ensure a bright future for the industry.

The reasons are many and varied - the new generations of players have a very similar personal history and it is difficult to sustain media and public interest in them; with the loss of the U.S. market after #BlackFriday in 2011, television is no longer an active ‘star incubator’ and buzz generator; last but not least, the industry, as represented by the biggest poker room operators, seems to be giving up on its own stars.  Rather than deal with their whimsical and often unruly nature, or wait for the pros to work out some common code of ethics and behavior, poker operators started looking for promoters and ambassadors elsewhere. And found them soon enough - in #sports.

To quote Lee Davy on CalvinAyre, ‘So the evolution of poker sponsorship has moved from the upstarts of the professional poker world, to the stars of world sport, to the teams that operate in the biggest leagues in the world’.

PokerStars took the lead and enlisted a fantastic line-up of athletes - Ronaldo, @Boris Becker, and @Rafael Nadal. #PartyPoker did even better and is partnering with legendary teams such as Real Madrid, Manchester United, and most recently, in the U.S. - with Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA and the New Jersey Devils of the NHL. 

When you’re looking to enhance the image of an industry, to associate the game of poker with skill, honest perseverance, integrity and enjoyment, rather than random luck and addictive gambling, to lend credibility to online poker and boost the popularity of live tournament play - then sport emerges as the natural choice and source of new ambassadors.

The match is perfect since there are more than enough eager candidate-diplomats among athletes, who have always been drawn to the glamor, risk, competition and intellectual challenge associated with poker. The ball is now in poker pros' own field and it will be interesting to see if they will defend their turf.

Professional Sports and Poker Teaming Up in New Jersey

New Jersey, the third state to allow online gambling is regarded as the test market for prospective US-wide launch of regulated online poker. This is a trial run for the investors, operators and marketeers involved and the entire poker industry is watching closely as the developments have huge implications for the near future.

In an unprecedented - in the U.S. -  marketing move, in January 2014, #PartyPokerNJ signed a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA and the New Jersey Devils of the NHL making PartyPoker their ‘official online gaming partner’.

“They are two of the most iconic names in American hockey and basketball with huge and loyal fan bases throughout New Jersey and the surrounding metropolitan areas," said Norbert Teufelberger, CEO of Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment that operates PartyPoker. "There is an affinity between playing in online poker tournaments and #sports  -- winning is about having intense focus, stamina and a great competitive spirit."

This arrangement is an instance of smart and far-sighted marketing in many respects, the least of which are the great promotional and advertising opportunities among the huge fan pool of the two popular teams.

The stronger ties between online poker and professional sports will help clear up any lingering doubts among the general public about the legality of online poker;

will favorably influence the skill-versus-chance debate which is very important in the regulation process;

will help foster the perception of poker as a sport in its own right, on an equal footing with other mind sports such as chess, bridge, and draughts;

by association with well-loved sports and athletes, will enhance the image of professional poker players and of the industry as a whole, and positively reinforce their place in American popular culture.

In sum, this partnership may provide further impetus to the legalisation process by its expected long-term impact in terms of enhanced legitimacy and credibility of online poker.

Predictably, the news got extensive coverage by all major media and as the deal includes social networks and mobile applications the partnership will enjoy a sustained web presence throughout the duration of the sponsorship agreement.

Si vous vous limitez seulement aux mains comme les paires, les brelans, les tirages couleurs et suites, alors vous ne jouerez pas du tout la plupart du temps. La majorité du temps, vous vous coucherez.
Si vous êtes d'un naturel compétitif, comme la plupart des bons joueurs, il y a quelque chose de très frustrant, du moins au début, dans le fait de se coucher aussi souvent. Les instincts de la plupart des joueurs leurs crient de se jeter dans la bataille. Abandonner ne reflète pas un comportement de compétition. Qu'en est-il de ce vieil adage, « ceux qui abandonnent ne gagnent jamais et ceux qui gagnent n'abandonnent jamais » ? Comment pouvez-vous gagner au poker si vous ne jouez jamais...

La vérité est celle-ci : « se coucher », aussi difficile soit-il, est la clé pour gagner sur le long terme. Nous gagnons en étant sélectifs; en ne jouant que des mains et des situations où nous avons un certain avantage; en ne jouant pas dans les situations et avec les mains où nous sommes désavantagés.
Dans tous les cas, c'est quelque chose de difficile à faire. Cela provoque l'ennui, la distraction et l'impatience. Un joueur à succès développera en fin de compte un self-control et une discipline nécessaires pour suivre des directives strictes de mains de départ.
Mais jusque là, que doit faire un joueur ? J'ai quelques suggestions pour que vous restiez concentrés même lorsque vous jetez beaucoup de vos mains de départ. Utilisez-les pour garder votre jeu aiguisé et votre esprit dans la partie lorsque vous jouerez.

Tout d'abord, je suggère un entraînement loin de la table de poker. Il y a des logiciels ou même les parties en « play money » que vous pouvez utiliser pour vous habituer à jeter des mains faibles. Le meilleur logiciel que j'ai trouvé pour ma spécialité, le 7-Card Stud, est le « Wilson's Turbo 7-Card Stud ». C'est vraiment un outil excellent pour plusieurs raisons. Il peut simuler les styles de jeu; il peut aussi vous permettre de programmer diverses situations de jeu pour trouver le moyen le plus profitable de jouer dans certaines conditions. Et, dans ce but, il n'a pas de concurrence étant donné que cela consiste à jouer une centaine de mains par heure en suivant vos résultats contre des joueurs générés par ordinateur. Il y a aussi un « hand advisor », un conseiller, qui vous avertit des « calls » qui ne sont pas bons – vous permettant de rester concentrés pour tout jeter sauf vos mains de départ premium.
Dans les parties en « play money », vous pouvez faire la même chose. Gardez l'habitude de jeter les mains de faible valeur sur la « Third Street ». Continuez ainsi jusqu'à ce que cela devienne une habitude. Lisez un livre ou vos e-mails pendant ce temps si vous voulez. La clé est que vous puissiez reconnaître que toutes les mains de ce type particulier tombent dans la catégorie des mains injouables – vous permettant de les jeter immédiatement et sans regret.
Gardez à l'esprit que vous ne jouerez pas toujours comme cela. En fait, lorsque vous deviendrez meilleurs et plus expérimentés, vous trouverez que presque chaque main devient jouable dans certaines situations. Mais au début, vous devez être tel un batteur de base-ball discipliné qui attend son tour.

Mis a part l'entrainement; attendre des mains de haute qualité devient ennuyeux même pour les meilleurs d'entre nous. Donc je suggère quelques choses à faire à la table pour vous aider à laisser passer les longues périodes creuses qui entrecoupent vos sessions de poker de temps à autres.

Exercices à la table. Craquement des doigts, roulements du cou, haussements d'épaule, fermer et ouvrir les poings, des exercices de respiration profonde et divers exercices isométriques peuvent tous être réalisés quand vous êtes assis. Faîtes-les. De la même façon, se lever et marcher un peu relâche la tension et fait circuler votre sang. Faîtes-le. Ne restez pas assis à votre chaise, immobile et inerte. Bougez et vous aurez tendance à moins succomber à la tentation de jouer une main simplement pour vous occuper.

Exercices hors de la table. La plupart des salles de poker se situent dans des lieux où vous pouvez faire un tour – au moins pour quelques centaines de mètres autour de la salle de poker. Si besoin est, allez dehors et prenez l'air. Votre partie sera toujours là lorsque vous reviendrez. Vous ne perdez rien en partant de la table et vous gagnez beaucoup. Vous vous donnez du temps pour penser à ce qui se passe, à remonter votre confiance et à fortifier votre self-contrôle et votre discipline.
Pendant que vous y êtes, prenez quelque chose à manger de temps à autres. Assurez-vous que vous devenez maitre de votre jeu et pas l'inverse. Perdez délibérément l'habitude de rester assis, prenez quelque chose à manger, pensez à ce que vous faites et retournez-y revigorés. Si vous êtes agités, fatigués, terriblement ennuyés ou distraits alors partez pour de bon. Il y aura toujours un autre jour pour une autre partie.
Une dernière note à propos du fait de se coucher. Si vous êtes assis à une table sans avoir de cartes pendant 20 minutes ou plus, et si vous avez jeté toutes les mains injouables, même votre adversaire le plus dense remarquera que vous jouez serré. Si vous obtenez finalement une paire premium et relancez, il est fort probable que tout le monde se couchera. Vous ne voulez pas être considéré de cette façon, c'est ào dire comme un roc. Le moyen de faire oublier à vos adversaires que vous êtes un joueur serré, c'est de partir pendant un moment. La plupart d'entre eux ont une mémoire très courte et ils ne se souviendront pas de ce que vous avez fait avant d'aller faire un tour. Donc aidez-les à oublier !
